A routine eye exam is not the same as a contact lens exam.
For contact lens wearers, a contact lens exam is necessary to ensure the lenses are fitting both eyes properly and that the health of the eyes is assessed whether the eyes are suitable for contact lenses.
COMPREHENSIVE EYE EXAM
A comprehensive eye exam is an essential part of your overall health care whether you need vision correction or not. By looking into your eyes, your doctor can check for signs of serious health conditions like hypertension and diabetes.
During a comprehensive eye exam, your doctor will look for signs of glaucoma, perform tests to check your vision sharpness, determine your prescription strength, examine how your eyes work together, and check the fluid pressure in your eyes. The doctor may also dilate your eyes to see if you have any eye conditions or signs of other serious health conditions.
CONTACT LENS EXAM
If you wear or want contacts, you need a contact lens exam in addition to a comprehensive eye exam. Your eye doctor will perform special tests during a contact lens exam to evaluate your vision with contacts. The first test will measure your eye surface to determine what size and type of contacts are best for you. Your doctor may also do a tear film evaluation to make sure you have enough tears to comfortably wear contacts.
With the results of those tests, your eye doctor can provide a contact lens prescription that is the right fit for your eyes. An eyeglass prescription is no substitute for a contact lens exam because the two are very different. An eyeglass prescription measures the lenses that are positioned approximately 12 millimeters from your eyes whereas a contact lens prescription measures for lenses that sit directly on the surface of the eye. An improper fitting or prescription of contacts can damage the health of the eyes.
Once you have the correct fit and prescription for contacts, you will need to decide whether you want disposable contacts or extended wear, and if you want your contacts to be coloured.
Your doctor will fit you with a trial pair of contacts and have you wear them for a few days, In about a week, you will need a follow up exam to make sure you have adjusted to your new lenses.
Whether you wear glasses or contacts, it's a good idea to get a yearly eye exam to maintain good eye health and to ensure your prescription is giving you the best possible vision.

Coloured contact lenses allow you to change your eye colour and create a look that's subtle, bold or anywhere in between — whether you want to enhance your everyday look or other special occasions.
All colour contact lenses are prescribed medical devices that must be fitted and followed up by your optometrist. And remember, never share them with anyone. Sharing lenses can lead to serious eye problems.

Your eyes’ health and safety are important. A contact lens fitting by your optometrist is necessary to help you find an option that suits your eyes and preserves your eye health. You need to maintain proper lens care and follow the instructions provided by your optometrist. It’s safe to wear coloured contacts.
Discuss with your optometrist to decide which brand will guarantee maximum comfort and eye safety.
Coloured contact lenses are designed to blend with your natural eye colour. Consequently, the effect given by the coloured contact lenses may vary depending on the natural colour of your iris.
The only sure way to know which colour looks great on you is to have a colour contact lens fitting with your optometrist to trial different colours of lenses to find the ones look best on you. A fitting fee may apply.
Many different colours are available for coloured lenses. Having a fitting for coloured contact lenses with your optometrist usually includes the opportunity to trial different colours of lenses to find the one that looks great on you.
Contacts for light eyes: Enhancement tints are usually best with lighter natural eye colours.
Contacts for dark eyes: In general, the darker your eyes are, the darker and/or more opaque a coloured lens you’ll want to select. A contact lens made for lighter eye colours (blue or green) isn’t going to show up as much on a darker eye.

Please follow your eye care practitioner's recommendations. Regular eye tests are important for maintaining healthy eyes and good vision.
Have your eyes examined regularly and always follow your optometrist's instructions for the proper use and care of your contact lenses.
Replace damaged, contaminated or scratched lenses immediately.
Avoid long nails, which harbour bacteria. A scratched eye is vulnerable to infection.
Replace your lens container every 3 months.
Do not share your contact lenses with others.
Do not sleep with your lenses on (unless they are designed for overnight use).
Do not wear your lenses beyond the period recommended.
Do not use household products (e.g. disinfectants) on your lenses.
Do not use saliva to wet your lenses.
Do not rinse your lenses or lens case with tap water.
If you experience pain or discomfort from your contact lens, discontinue use immediately and consult your optometrist.
Although many brands of contact lenses are approved for wearing overnight, sleeping in lenses does increase the risk of eye infection.
Check with your optometrist if it is appropriate for you and your lens type.
It is recommended that if you are a soft contact lens wearer, that you put on your lenses before applying your makeup.
Always remove your contact lenses before removing makeup.
Sports vision doctors agree that contact lenses are the best vision correction option for athletes. They can enhance visual skills like depth perception, peripheral awareness, and eye-hand/eye-foot coordination.
Unlike glasses, contacts offer athletes a competitive advantage because they stay in place under dynamic conditions, provide a wider vision field, and eliminate the risk of glasses-related injuries. Contact lenses also make it easy to wear protective goggles
Contact lenses are available for just about any prescription. They can correct your astigmatism, and multifocal contacts can help those with presbyopia to have sharp near, intermediate, and distance vision.
Numerous studies have found that children as young as eight years of age can adapt to, handle and care for contacts. Maturity, personal hygiene and motivation on the part of the young person are important factors to consider when assessing suitability for contact lens wear.
Please consult your optometrist.
No. Acanthamoeba and certain forms of bacteria present in water can become attached to contact lenses, resulting in potential infection.
It is recommended not to wear contacts while in a shower, bathtub or hot tub. Acanthamoeba and certain forms of bacteria present in water can become attached to contact lenses, resulting in potential infection.
If contacts are being worn while showering, in a bathtub or hot tub, care should be taken to avoid water being splashed into the eyes. It is recommended to keep the eyes firmly closed while showering. If lenses are accidentally exposed to water, instill a lubricating drop to help loosen the lens on the eye then remove the lens with clean, dry hands. Next, clean and disinfect the lens before re-inserting, or discard the lens.
Never sleep in a lens that has been exposed to water without first cleaning and disinfecting it.
This is a common and natural concern. It helps to first get used to touching your eyes without applying a lens. One very successful technique is to place a warm (not hot) drop of water on your clean index finger and bring it up to the eye and actually touch your eye. The water has a numbing effect such that you may not even feel your finger against your eye.

It's easier than you think to get used to lens application. If fact, often when people get used to inserting and removing lenses, they question why they did not make the commitment to contact lenses sooner.
Not a chance. It's physically impossible. A membrane covers your eye and connects inside of your eyelids so there's no chance that could happen.
Such contact lens-related problems can occur, but they’re unlikely. Most common eye health issues are caused by poorly fitted lenses, or by not taking care of the lenses like you should.
Not likely. Contact lenses can be easily removed using the method your Optometrist recommended. All it takes is practice and patience.
Not likely. With proper fitting, contacts should stay in place almost all the time. Even on that rare occasion when a contact lens moves out of place, it usually stays in your eye until you move it back.
Contact lens-related health problems can occur, but they’re rare. Infections are most commonly related to poor cleaning routines or other lens care-related issues. If you follow your eye doctor’s directions for proper wear and care, you should be fine.
Contacts can be surprisingly affordable. And with vision insurance, out-of-pocket costs may be even less. Plus, replacing a lost contact lens can be cheap and easy compared to replacing lost or damaged glasses.
If your need vision correction, contact lenses are an easy, always-there alternative to wear when you need them for certain activities, such as sports. And, unlike glasses, contacts won’t smudge, steam up, fall off or break, and you won’t lose any peripheral vision.
Please consult your optometrist for your contact lenses need.
No. Your contact lenses have been specially fit to your unique vision needs and the unique shape of your eye. Friends don’t let friends share contacts.
In general, no. Unless your Optometrist has instructed you otherwise, you can safely wear your lenses every day.
Contact lenses are safe. Be sure to stick to the replacement schedule and cleaning instructions that your Optometrist provides and you’re good to go.
We love to hear feedback from you.
